Which is better for big pike? Heading up Drayton this week and putting one rod out for carp and one for pike. Only ever gone spinning for pike and only caught jacks.
All ideas taken on board and thanks.

if you are carp fishing then you will be static, so I suggest that you fish a punctured deadbait. Spinning is a very mobile method and mobility and carping dont go hand in hand at this time of year. I would fish a zig for the carp and a whole deadbait for the pike.

Dont think either or will definatly get you into the bigger pike. If your spinning use big lures so if you do catch it will be bigger (or should be). But you want to take as little as possible and stay on the move and wouldnt take the carp rod with you. That way you will be able to cover a large area of the lake to find the pike.
If you want to fish for both carp and pike fish a drifting float and deadbait a foot or so off the bottom and let the wind drift it about to cover more water. Just keep your eye on the float pal.

I tend to agree with Adam. The oils will flow out the fish easier from the open end so the pike will home in on the deadbait quicker.

If you cut it diagonally there will be a larger surface area leaking blood, guts and oils. Also if you cut a mackrel in half you will have two baits instead of one which is pretty handy if your bait rips free of the hooks on your first cast of the day (been there, done it, got the tee shirt) although Mackrel is quite tough.
I was at Stanwicks yesterday and I had a pike of approx 8-10 lbs on an 8" section of lamprey, im going back on Saturday.
