Perfect Depth For The Zig Rig

I start at around 3/4 of the depth and work the rig shallower and shallower until i find the carp. So if fishing in 10 foot of water would start with my zig set at 2.5 foot under the surface then work down to the bottom a foot or so at a time.
What depth does everyone start the Zig at and would you say that mine is a good start?

I normally use an adjustable zig and start with it about an inch under the surface. I will then take it two turns down on the reel every half hour till it gets to the bottom then I will try again with it cast to a different spot.
